Secular : The absence of religious involvement in government affairs as well as absence of government involvement in religious affairs. It is a movement that promotes the idea that the state should stay separate from religion or not be exclusively allied or against any particular religion.
During the birth of the USA, the Founding Fathers, were revolted by the injustices in the United Kingdom. They decided to make things change and to create a new state where everything would be different and took many steps to make sure that the same violations would never happen to the American citizens. They recognized the need for the right to practice any religion you want. This idea has now been interpreted to mean that faith and religion should be absent from government life and American culture.
Thomas Jefferson was the sponsor of a law which established religious freedom for all Americans. Indeed, he created a right: no person would be forced to attend or support a church. In that same law, he defended the religious independence that each American has and deserves, which allows them to practice their religions without persecution. This Idea of religious freedom was because there were Protestants from England and German Catholics who were living side by side in the new nation. Many of them were persecuted in Europe at this time, and they didn’t want all of this to happen in the United States.
As a matter of fact Benjamin Franklin, was one of the most outspoken members of the Founding Fathers when they had to talk about religion in government. Secularism became a synonym for the religious freedom, a philosophy which stood for tolerance and freedom despite the differences. The Founding Fathers wanted to create a nation where everyone would be given the right to publicly express their religious opinions and beliefs.
